Fort Myers Mighty Mussels News Release

SARASOTA -- It isn't often in baseball when a 13-run output by a team is overshadowed, so it took Steve Hirschfeld's first career complete- game victory to steal the spotlight in the Fort Myers Miracle's 13- 0 shutout of the Sarasota Reds at Ed Smith Stadium on Wednesday.

Hirschfeld (3-4) went the distance, tossing all nine innings and allowing just three hits. He walked one and struck out two. Reds runners reached second base in just two innings: the first and the eighth. He recorded ten groundouts and fourteen groundouts.

A nine-run inning in the second -- the Miracle's second nine-run frame this year -- helped put it out of reach early. Alex Soto crushed his first Fort Myers home run, a three-run shot to kick off the scoring in that inning. The Miracle would send 15 hitters to the plate in that inning. The top two hitters in Fort Myers' order -- Ben Revere and Estarlin de los Santos -- had already been at the plate three times before the Reds' cleanup hitter, Neftali Soto, even faced Hirschfeld once.

It was a very tough outing for Sarasota's Rafael Gonzalez, whose ERA sailed from 3.38 before the game to 4.94 after. Gonzalez (2-4) lasted one and one-third with ten hits, ten runs (all earned), one walk, one strikeout.

De los Santos (3-for-6) and Mark Dolenc (2-for-5) each had two RBI games, while Soto's homer gave him three. Revere and de los Santos had three hits, Chris PArmelee, Nick Romero, and Dolenc had two. The Miracle rapped out 17 hits in the first game after Palm Beach became the first team to sweep the Miracle all year long.

Fort Myers and Sarasota continue the three-game series on Thursday at 7:00 p.m.
