Indianapolis Ice News Release
INDIANAPOLIS, IN-- The Indianapolis Ice took care of its goaltending needs for next season with the signings today of Shawn Silver and Jamie Morris.
Silver, 26, will be making his North American professional debut with the Ice, but has played the last three seasons professionally in two of the elite leagues in Europe. He is coming off a dominant year with the Fife Flyers of the British National League in which he posted a 28-12-3 record to go along with a 2.44 goals-against-average and a league-leading .917 save percentage. Before his stint in the BNL, Silver played two seasons for London and Sheffield of the British Superleague and posted a combined record of 20-14-1.
"I'm extremely pleased to have Shawn on board," said Ice Head Coach Ken McRae. He has put up great numbers in two of the top European leagues and he has had valuable experience both collegiately and in juniors."
Before turning pro, Silver accumulated a full mantle of awards at St. Francis Xavier University (AUAA) in Canada. He was a four-time AUAA All-Star and was named the team's most valuable player in two of his four years after going 62-27-6 during his four-year run at the school. His play was recognized not only in the Eastern portion of Canada, but throughout the country as he was also a former two-time CIAU Academic All Canadian and a CIAU All Rookie First Team Member.
He also played three years in the OHL with Sudbury, Windsor and Owen Sound. His 1994-95 season with Owen Sound saw him form a goaltending trio with current NHL netminders, Brent Johnson (St. Louis) and Jamie Storr (Los Angeles) and earn the team's Playoff MVP award for leading the club through several rounds of the playoffs.
Morris, 28, returns for year four with the Ice after a workhorse season last year with the club. He ranked third in the league in games played (48) and shutouts (3) and deserved a better fate on many nights last season. Overall, he compiled an 18-23-5 record to go along with a respectable 3.06 GAA and .908 save percentage. His win total, GAA, save percentage and shutout total were all professional bests.
"The signing of Jamie really gives us a solid one-two punch in net," said McRae. "Jamie has been a great asset to this franchise and has been one of the top CHL workhorses in net the last three seasons."
The team's 2000 Playoff MVP, Morris sits atop CHL Ice record books in just about every goaltending category as he leads in games played (106), wins (42) and career shutouts (4). His playoff numbers are superb as well as he is 8-4 with a 1.73 GAA in 13 playoff games with the team.
"With our schedule, it is essential to have two quality goaltenders," said McRae. "With Shawn and Jamie, it gives us a chance to win every night."
