Herrera Dazzles But Ducks Come Back Late

(Central Islip, NY): The York Revolution got a superb effort from Jhoendri Herrera and a pair of solo home runs, but the Long Island Ducks plated a pair of two-out runs in the bottom of the eighth for a 3-2 victory on Saturday night in front of 4,420 fans at Fairfield Properties Ballpark. The Revs drop their fourth straight, falling to five games behind first place Long Island.

Long Island landed the first punch in the bottom of the second as Chris Shaw connected on a solo home run to right-center for an early 1-0 lead.

The Revs answered back as Carlos Franco hammered a solo blast to right-center with two outs in the fourth, tying the game at 1-1 on his ninth of the year. That snapped a streak of 11 consecutive batters retired by Ducks starter Scott Harkin to start the game, the longest streak in a game against the Revs this season.

Josue Herrera led off the top of the fifth with his ninth home run, also a solo shot to right-center, giving York a 2-1 lead.

Revs starter Jhoendri Herrera was magnificent, allowing just two hits and one run in a season-high seven innings while striking out a season-high five batters. He retired his final eight batters faced, and 15 of his final 16 in a masterful performance.

Luis Sanchez recorded the first two outs quickly in the bottom of the eighth out of the Revs bullpen, but after jumping ahead of Johnni Turbo 0-2, allowed a walk to extend the inning. Vladimir Frias singled to right advancing Turbo to third, and Steve Lombardozzi walked to load the bases. That set the stage for pinch-hitter Jesse Berardi who yanked a two-run double toward the right field corner, giving Long Island the 3-2 lead.

York threatened against righty Dylan Peiffer in the ninth as Osmy Gregorio reached on an error, JC Encarnacion singled up the middle to put runners at the corners, and Lenin Rodriguez was hit by a pitch to load the bags. Peiffer rebounded to strike out James Harris looking, and retired Jack Kenley on a line out to left, ending the game with his first pro save. York was unable to tack on after grabbing its 2-1 lead, stranding nine runners, all from the fifth inning forward.

The Revs and Ducks wrap their three-game series Sunday at 1:35 p.m. with York lefty Austin Nicely (7-8, 3.43) facing Long Island right-hander Anderson DeLeon (5-4, 4.94). Revs fans can catch the action live exclusively on the WOYK YouTube channel beginning at 1:15 p.m. with Darrell Henry on the call, while the Philadelphia Eagles' Week 2 contest against the San Francisco 49ers airs on radio on SportsRadio 98.9 FM & 1350 WOYK beginning at 12 p.m.
