Hernandez Named MLS Player of the Week

July 11, 2006 - Major League Soccer (MLS) News Release

NEW YORK (July 10, 2006) - Colorado Rapids forward Nicolas Hernandez has been named MLS Player of the Week for his efforts in leading the Colorado Rapids to a 2-0-0 record in Week 15. With two goals and two assists, Hernandez had a hand in all four goals Colorado scored during the week.

On Independence Day Hernandez led the Rapids to a 3-2 victory over the visiting New England Revolution scoring two goals and adding an assist. He added another assist to his total setting up Clint Mathis on the game's only goal as the Rapids came away with a 1-0 victory.

Hernandez provided plenty of fireworks for the Rapids on America's birthday. His first goal against the Revolution came just thirteen minutes in on a header from a Terry Cooke corner kick. A Revolution miscue led to Hernandez's second goal in the 69th minute. A misplayed ball by Shalrie Joseph fell to Jacob Peterson, who made a short pass to Hernandez about 20 yards from goal. Hernandez moved around a defender and struck a hard shot that hit the bottom of the crossbar and bounced down into the net.

In Saturday's game, Hernandez set up Mathis' first goal of the season in the 91st minute to give the Rapids a 1-0 victory over the visiting Kansas City Wizards.

Hernandez has spearheaded the Rapids recent surge, as Colorado is 3-1-1 in their last five games. During the five-game stretch he has three goals and two assists. The Rapids currently sit in third place in the Western Conference - three points behind the second place Houston Dynamo and only six points behind front runners FC Dallas.

The Major League Soccer Player of the Week is selected each week of the MLS regular season by a panel of journalists from the Professional Soccer Reporters Association (PSRA).
