Corpus Christi IceRays News Release
CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas - Forward Matthew Headland of the Corpus Christi IceRays has committed to play NCAA Division III hockey for the SUNY Canton Kangaroos. The Nottingham, England native will begin his student-athlete career at the State University of New York College of Technology at Canton this fall (2019-20).
"I'm very happy for Matt as he has worked extremely hard for this opportunity," said IceRays Head Coach/GM Ryan Cruthers. "We look forward to watching him at the next level."
The 5-foot-9, 161-pound, left-shot forward is the 14th player from the IceRays' roster to commit to an NCAA school.
Headland, 20, was added to the IceRays' roster in mid-November, posting 15 points (5+10) in 39 regular season games, as well as playing in all five playoff games. Headland scored the lone goal in the IceRays' 1-0 victory over the Topeka Pilots on April 5, clinching the team's third-consecutive playoff berth.
Headland is the second member of the 2018-19 IceRays to commit to SUNY Canton after forward Brendan McCormack, who played for Corpus Christi through December, committed to the "Roos" in April.
The IceRays return this fall for their 22nd season of hockey in Corpus Christi. The 2019-20 North American Hockey League (NAHL) schedule is expected to be released in the next month.
