Waterloo Black Hawks News Release
Waterloo, Iowa - The first official game on the Waterloo Black Hawks' 2023/24 schedule will be against the Fargo Force on Friday, September 22nd during the DICK'S Sporting Goods USHL Fall Classic in Cranberry Township, Pennsylvania.
The United States Hockey League revealed details about that game and the event's other matchups on Thursday morning. The Waterloo-Fargo tilt is scheduled for 4:30 p.m. Central Time. During the trip, the Black Hawks will also face the Madison Capitols on Saturday, September 23rd, with puck drop slated for 7:30.
Waterloo and Fargo grappled for the top spot in the USHL Western Conference throughout 2022/23. Although the Force ended up with the league's best regular season record, the Hawks claimed five of the seven head-to-head meetings. Meanwhile, Waterloo and Madison have not met since November 24, 2021, when the Hawks edged the Caps in an exciting 2-1 overtime affair on Thanksgiving eve.
The other 60 games on Waterloo's 2023/24 schedule were revealed in early June. The Hawks' home opener will be Saturday, October 14th against the Omaha Lancers at 6:05 p.m. It will be the first of 13 Saturday home games at Young Arena this season. The matchup also opens a season-long five-game homestand, concluding on Saturday, November 4th against the Muskegon Lumberjacks.
This season, Waterloo will meet the Cedar Rapids RoughRiders, Des Moines Buccaneers, and Dubuque Fighting Saints eight times apiece. Four matchups had been on the schedule against each of the Hawks' Western Conference rivals. Thursday's announcement means a fifth game with Fargo. Waterloo will meet Madison three times and other Eastern Conference foes (aside from Cedar Rapids and Dubuque) twice.
Some of the Hawks' premier home dates in 2023/24 include:
- Friday, October 20th versus the Lincoln Stars in a rematch of last season's Western Conference playoff series.
- Thursday, November 23rd, the Cedar Rapids RoughRiders visit on Thanksgiving.
- Thursday, December 28th, some of the best young American players come to town with the National Team Development Program Under-17s.
- Sunday, December 31st, Waterloo meets the Dubuque Fighting Saints on New Year's Eve.
- Friday, February 9th, the Green Bay Gamblers return to Young Arena for the first time since October 25, 2019.
Waterloo's Saturday home games will begin at 6:05 p.m. The New Year's Eve contest against Dubuque also starts at 6:05, with all other Sunday home contests slated for 3:05 p.m. The remainder of the Hawks home games will start at 7:05 p.m.; start times are subject to change.
