Bakersfield Blitz News Release
Everett, WA. - After a season opener loss to the Bakersfield Blitz, the Everett Hawks were looking for a rematch. The Hawks got their wish on July 8th in front of the home crowd consisting of 1485 fans. On the first drive of the game the Hawks had to settle for a 27 yard field goal by K Craig Hawley. The Blitz took advantage of the Hawks inability to get into the end-zone by scoring their own touchdown with a 16 yard pass from QB Bobby Pesavento to WR/DB DeRonn Finley on their opening drive. However Blitz kicker Jaret Johnson missed the extra point and that was the beginning of the Blitz's sloppy play. With a 9-6 lead after QB Brian Baker floated a 26 yard touchdown to WR/DB Hassan Brockman, the Hawks defense took over. The defense caused Bakersfield to fumble on back to back drives and the Hawks capitalized. First with a pounding 1 yard TD run by FB/LB Jason Null and the other was a 24 yard fumble recovery by WR/DB Tavarius Davis to extend the lead to 22-6 in the Hawks favor. The Blitz misfortune continued when QB Pesavento went down with an injury after having gone 3 of 7 for 44 yards and 1 touchdown. The Blitz seemed to regain a spark after Finley returned a kickoff 56 yards for a touchdown, but this did not derail the Hawks. Especially WR/DB LeJuan Edwards who on the Hawks drive left his feet at the edge of the wall for a spectacular catch which was deemed the Cutters Catch of the Game. Right after Edwards' amazing catch he continued his dominant play by making a diving catch in the end zone to increase the Hawks lead to 36-13 with 5:14 left in the half. The Hawks added another score and went into halftime with a 43-13 lead. The Blitz struck first in the second half with a long TD pass to WR/DB George Williams, however the deficit created by the Hawks was too much for the Blitz to overcome. The Hawks would put up three more touchdowns by the end of the game two of which were passes from Schutt Offensive Player of the game Brian Baker who finished the night 15 for 24 with 206 yards and 6 touchdowns. Blitz backup QB Ryan Porter did not find the same success as Brian Baker as he finished 17 of 31 for 214 yards and 2 TDs. With the Hawks leading 63-34, QB Wes Beschorner closed out the game with 2 rushes for 4 yards and that was the end of the Blitz.
