Lubbock Hawks News Release

The Lubbock Hawks of the National Women's Basketball League (NWBL), have come close to filling its 12-woman roster for the 2005 inaugural season. The talent is endless and the newest addition is no exception.

Kelly Mazzante of the WNBA's Charlotte Sting and a 2004 graduate of Penn State, can now call Lubbock home. Mazzante, a Pennsylvania native is a 3-time Kodak All-American. In 2003 and 2004 she was a Wade Trophy Finalist and Big Ten Player of the Year. Kelly has countless records in NCAA history including, leading the nation in scoring during the 2002 season, and ranks 3rd in the NCAA for most 3-pointers (357) made during her college career.

Kelly is looking forward to becoming a Lubbock Hawk, "I am excited about the opportunity. Playing with the Hawks gives me a chance to improve my game."

Mazzante finished her college career as the Big Ten (male or female) and Penn State all-time leading scorer, placing her 9th in the NCAA record books for career points (2,919). She is the only player ever to be named to the First Team All Big Ten four years in a row. Kelly wasted no time getting in to the record books and is the fastest player in Big Ten and Penn State history to reach 1000 (47 games) and 2000 (88 games) career points.

The Lubbock Hawks head coach, Sheryl Estes, who also scouts for the WNBA's Charlotte Sting says that Kelly had a good rookie season, "She has proven herself in the WNBA. Mazzante is a great shooter and scorer." Coach Estes is pleased to have another player of Kelly's caliber on the roster and hopes it drives the citizens of Lubbock out to support the city's new team.

Kelly played in 34 of the Charlotte Stings' games during the 2004 season. She had a game high of 15 points early in her rookie season against the Connecticut Sun.

So how is the eastern lady going to settle in to Lubbock? Kelly says Lubbock is different, but she is excited about coming to West Texas, "Since a lot of my teammates (Hawks) are from Texas they will make me feel comfortable and show me around."
