Hawks release 2005 schedule
December 14, 2004 - National Women's Basketball League (NWBL)
Lubbock Hawks News Release
The Lubbock Hawks are circling the Hub City and preparing to land in less then three weeks. One of the newest teams in the National Women's Basketball League (NWBL), the Hawks are looking to bring excitement, fun, and competitive professional women's basketball to Lubbock.
The league consists of six teams in San Jose, Chicago, Birmingham, Colorado, and the defending champs in Dallas. The season will run from January to April, with the Hawks playing 12 home games; including an all-star game, a playoff series and championship game. The league recently released the schedule. "It was a very tedious process," says general manager Ricky Romero, "we wanted to make sure that our home games never conflicted with home games of the Lady Raiders. We're Texas Tech fans too!"
Ricky and head coach Sheryl Estes have been crossing the United States looking for the best possible players to bring to West Texas. "We have a very talented team," says Ricky, "I believe we have one of the best teams in the league." Well, fans will definitely find out when the Hawks play their first home game against defending champions, the Dallas Fury on January 18, 2004.
The Lubbock Hawks boast an impressive roster with 8 current and former players from the Women's National Basketball Association (WNBA). The NWBL provides for current WNBA players an alternative to playing the off-season overseas, while giving WNBA hopefuls the opportunity to play with some of the best talent in professional women's basketball and the opportunity to get scouted by WNBA teams.
Shereka Wright and former Texas Tech star Plenette Pierson, current WNBA teammates, come to the Hawks from the Phoenix Mercury. Alicia Thompson, another ex-Lady Raider brings her talents to the team from the WNBA's Seattle Storm. As well as former Texas Tech foe Stacy Stephens from the University of Texas and player with the Detroit Shock. From one coast to another the Lubbock Hawks have signed Jackie Stiles from the Los Angeles Lakers and Molly Creamer of the New York Liberty. Kelly Mazzante joins the Hawks as a player with the Charlotte Sting and former Phoenix Mercury standout Umeki Webb. Rounding out the 12-woman roster the Lubbock Hawks have signed Kesha Watson from Oklahoma City University, Hazel Taylor out of Wayland Baptist, and Fatou N'Diaye an overseas pro. One spot remains for local talent.
Season tickets for the Lubbock Hawks' 2005 inaugural season are currently on sale and can be purchased at the Lubbock Sports Center located at 6024 45th Street or by calling 806-797-2333. All games will be played at the Rip Griffin Center on the campus of Lubbock Christian University. For further information log on to www.nwbl.com.
