Lubbock Hawks News Release

Lubbock, TX- Becky Hammon, Ruth Riley and the Colorado Chill paid their first visit to Lubbock Friday night, with a 7:00 PM tip-off at the Rip Griffin Center.

Friday's match-up was the third time this season the Chill and Hawks have met, with Colorado leading the series 2-0. Lubbock was looking for some pay back, but it was going to be hard against the league leaders. Colorado came in to the game with only one lost.

Colorado got on the board first with a shot by Ruth Riley. Riley led all scores at the half with 10-points, she finished the night with 20-points.

Jocelyn Penn put the Hawks in the game, scoring Lubbock's first 6-points. Behind the pressure of Rochelle Luckett, Kelly Mazzante and Molly Creamer, the Hawks were able to cause 15 first-half turnovers by the Chill and turned them in to 20-points.

Stacy Stephens came in to the game with 13:39 remaining in the first-half.

Stephens did not play in Tuesday's game against Chicago, and was listed day-to-day for a foot injury. Stephens evened the scored at 15 with 10:09 in the first-half off of an inbounds play with one-second remaining on the shot clock.

In 9-minutes of first-half play Stephens added 4-points and collected 4 boards.

With 1:58 remaining in the 1st half, Stephens was blocked by Riley, but staying with the ball paid off. Stephens added 2-points to put Lubbock ahead 31-28.

Much like Lubbock has finished all season, the Hawks led Colorado at the half 37-34.

Lubbock started off the second-half, with Wright putting 2-points on the board with 19:37 remaining in the game. Wright left the game with 17:30 remaining, after re-aggravating a foot injury.

Lubbock went on a 13-0 run, leading the Chill 56-42. Colorado got back in to the game after some solid play by Hammon and Riley. Hammon finished the night leading all scores with 22-points. After a put back shot by Erin Scholz, the Chill tied the game at 59-59.

From the 9:00 minute mark in the second-half to the end of the game, the score went back and forth between the Hawks and Chill with 7-lead changes.

Colorado began to pull away at the end of the 2nd half, pulling ahead 73-70 behind a Riley block and Hammon lay-up.

Lubbock was able to pull within one with 2:04 remaining. 4-straght points by Colorado put the Chill ahead 80-76, but the Hawks were not out of the game, not just yet.

Luckett caused a jump ball, that Lubbock got control of and was able to score 2-points to bring the Hawks within 2. With :40 left in the game Colorado called a timeout. Loosing only 4-seconds off the clock, Luckett was fouled and went to the line. She missed both shots that would have tied the game at 80-80. Behind a missed shot by Penn, who

finished the night as the Hawks leading scorer with 17-points, Hammon was fouled and sent to the line, where she connected on both of her free-throws to put the Chill ahead 82-78 with :9 remaining. Too little too late, Watson added 3-points for Lubbock, in the Hawks first home lost of the season 82-81.

Colorado improves to (8-1) on the season and Lubbock falls to (4-4). The Hawks travel Birmingham in the morning to take on the Power in their first meeting of the season. Lubbock will travel home on Sunday to meet the Fury, in a 7:00 PM tip-off. Lubbock won the first meeting between the two teams 90-84.
