Augusta RiverHawks News Release
Augusta-GA--The Augusta RiverHawks gave the Huntsville Havoc everything they had Friday night at the James Brown Arena, but an amazing goaltending performance gave the visitors a 3-0 victory. Havoc goaltender Dan McWhinney made 46 saves for his second shut out of the season, giving his club the victory.
The victory was a big one symbolically for the Havoc as it moves them out of last place in the Southern Professional Hockey League, and slides the RiverHawks right back into it. Both teams will have the opportunity to flip-flop positions again tomorrow night as both are in action.
The RiverHawks used three separate power plays in the first period to put the heat on the Havoc. Despite firing 20 shots at Havoc goaltender Dan McWhinney the RiverHawks were unable to get on the board, getting stymied every time by Huntsville's netminder. The first frame ended in a scoreless draw.
The Havoc made the RiverHawks pay for their lack of opportunistic offense early in the second period. An innocent looking play resulted in a bouncing puck dribbling into an empty slot. Havoc forward Chapen LeBlond jumped on that loose puck and fired a spin-around slap shot past a stunned RiverHawks goaltender Robby Moss to give his club the one-goal lead.
The RiverHawks continued to press the play towards the Havoc zone throughout the second period, but were repeatedly unable to beat McWhinney. The second period ended with the Havoc enjoying a 1-0 lead.
The Havoc managed to grab control of the game in the third period with a couple of timely goals. It was quick work once again by the Havoc forwards, as just under two minutes into the period Colin Reddin took a loose puck out of the corner and beat Moss with a shot just inside the post.
The game remained 2-0 for another eight minutes before Ian Boots tallied with the Havoc's first power play goal of the night. The RiverHawks completed the game without a power play goal despite being awarded eight opportunities.
The RiverHawks will be back in action tomorrow night as the Knoxville Ice Bears travel to Augusta. It's the Holiday Spectacular featuring the Teddy Bear Toss! Game time is set for 7:35PM.
