Columbus win over Surge

The third time wasn't a charm for the Mississippi Surge agaisnt the Columbus Cottonmouths, as they failed to charm the Snakes and lost 5-2 Friday night in Columbus. It was the third win for Columbus over the Surge in as many games this season.

Jeff Grant opened the scoring for the Surge midway through the first period, with his sixth goal of the season, and the second shorthanded goal by the Surge this year. But before the first period ended, Columbus' Brett Tyler scored on a power play to tie the game.

The home team took control in the second period scoring three straight goals in the first 13 and a half minutes. Jordan Braid scored at 1:20, defenseman Tom Maldonado made it 3-1 midway through the period, and Braid scored his second goal, and the second power play goal of the night for Columbus four minutes later. Before the period ended, James Isaacs answered back for the Surge with a power play goal. The Surge went 1-for-6 with the man advantage while Columbus was 2-for-5 on its power play.

Levi Lund rounded out the scoring for Columbus at 11:11 of the third period. Tyler picked up his second assist of the night on that goal, giving him three points for the game.

The Surge returns home to host the Louisiana IceGators Saturday night at 7:05 p.m. at the Mississippi Coast Coliseum. It will be the Surge's final home game before Christmas.
