Hawks continue to build roster
November 23, 2004 - National Women's Basketball League (NWBL)
Lubbock Hawks News Release
The Lubbock Hawks of the National Women's Basketball League (NWBL) are leaving no stone unturned, in terms of finding the very best talent in women's basketball. So, when the Hawks say that they are giving Lubbock fans the very best the world has to offer, the team means it literally.
The addition of two new players has taken the Hawks as far as West Africa and as close as Plainview. Fatou N'Diaye and Hazel Taylor are the newest additions to the Hawks inside game.
Fatou is originally from Senegal, West Africa and comes to the NWBL with an enormous amount of international experience. She was a member of the 2002 Senegal National Team that participated in the World Cup in China. Fatou also spent the 2002 season playing in Spain.
Standing at 6'6, Coach Estes says that Fatou's size will be a tremendous asset to the team, "She scores well around the basket and is a great rebounder." Coach Estes is planning to use Stacy Stephens and Fatou inside.
Fatou played two seasons in Germany and began her professional basketball career in 1998, playing two seasons in the Netherlands.
The Lubbock Hawks did not have to look too far for Hazel Taylor. While a coach at Wayland Baptist, Coach Sheryl Estes helped recruit Taylor from Trinidad and Tobago.
Hazel is a 3-year member of the Kodak All-American Team, as well as being named an NAIA All-American in 1997, 1998, and 1999. She holds the school's career scoring average, averaging 24.5 points a game and is second on the Flying Queens 1,000 point club, with 2,446 career points.
Taylor is quick on her feet and during the 1997 season at Wayland collected 15 steals in one game placing her, yet again, in a different category in the record books. She also holds the record for career steals.
Coach Estes says Hazel brings experience to the Hawks and is a tremendous athlete, "She is a terrific scorer and rebounder." Coach Estes plans to use her primarily in the inside.
This Flying Queen has landed and placed her crown with the Lubbock Hawks. Hazel says she is very excited to be playing in Lubbock, "I have waited for this opportunity for a long time," and she is in good company, "it is such a privilege to play with someone like Kesha Watson and Stacy Stephens."
Season tickets for the Lubbock Hawks' 2005 inaugural season are currently on sale and can be purchased at the Lubbock Sports Center located at 6024 45th Street or by calling 806-797-2333. All games will be played at the Rip Griffin Center on the campus of Lubbock Christian University. For further information log on to www.nwbl.com.
