Augusta RiverHawks News Release

Augusta, GA--The Augusta RiverHawks used a complete team effort and an explosive second period to defeat the Mississippi Surge 4-0 Friday night at the James Brown Arena. It was the RiverHawks' second win in a row and first victory at home so far this season.

After a scoreless first period Augusta took advantage of some major turnovers by the Surge in the second period. Shawn Skelly opened the scoring as he picked fired the puck in from an awkward angle. He fired the shot straight into the feet of Surge goaltender Dan Clark, and it found its way over the goal line.

It remained a one-goal game until the RiverHawks went on the power play with less than seven minutes remaining in the period. Patrick Schafer started the play behind the Surge net, firing it out front to Chad Ziegler. The puck hit Ziegler and slid straight over to Dennis Sicard, who poked it in the empty net.

Three minutes later the RiverHawks were back at it in the Surge zone. Skelly slid the puck over to Taylor McReynolds, who sent a quick pass up to Will Lacasse. Lacasse wasted no time, firing a snap-shot over Clark's shoulder and into the net.

The RiverHawks were not finished with the offense in the second period. Skelly stripped the Surge defenseman of the puck as they attempted to break out of their zone. Skelly slid the puck over to Ian Watters and went straight to the net. Watters fired a shot that went off the end boards, and straight out to Skelly who fired it into the back of the net. The goal was his second of the game and fourth in his past two games.

The Surge changed goaltenders headed into the third period in an attempt to change the momentum, but the RiverHawks stepped up their defensive play and shut the Surge down. What shots did get through to the RiverHawks' net, goaltender Robby Moss managed to turn away, preserving his first career shut-out. Moss made 28 saves for his second win of the season.
