
Hawks beat Spiders

The Lubbock Hawks (2-1) took on the San Jose Spiders (0-2), Friday night at the Rip Griffin Center. The two teams have met twice this week. THe Hawks took the win in San Jose on Sunday, and the Spiders traveled to Lubbock planning to return the favor.
In the first meeting between the two teams, the Spiders were dominated in the first half by the Hawks who shot 59% from the field. San Jose started the game neck and neck with Lubbock, doing their best to keep the contest close. The Hawks' Jocelyn Penn put points on the board first, followed by two San Jose buckets, but the Hawks soon took flight. In her first start of the season, Kesha Watson scored a field goal followed by a 3-point shot. Watson led the Hawks with 9 points at the half.
Molly Creamer and Rochelle Luckett combined for 8 steals. The Hawks were able to score 16-points off of the Spiders' 19 first half turnovers.
San Jose scored in between smooth passes and a string of scoring drives by Lubbock, but at halftime the game was quite reminscent of the first meeting between the teams, with Lubbock leading San Jose 41-26.
The Spiders came biting back in the second-half, but they didn't have enough venom to put the Hawks out. San Jose outrebounded Lubbock in both halves, but were unable to captailize on the advantage.
A combination of points from Barbie Carmichael, Tatiana Taylor, and Amisha Carter brought the Spiders to within 6, with less then 5 minutes remaining. A quick basket from Watson strecthed the Hawks's lead back to 8.
When the teams last met, Lubbock was outscored in the second half, but they were determined to let it happen again. The Hawks stepped up their defense, causing a Spider shot clock violation.
The Hawks then went in to full gear with a 3 by Creamer to extend their lead to 11 with 3:00 minutes remaining in the ball game.
Penn had another big game against the Spiders, recording her second double-double of the season with 17 points and 11 rebounds. The Hawks sent San Jose back to California with another lose of the season, winning 73-54, improving to 3-1 and undefeated at home.
The Lubbock Hawks take on the Chicago Blaze, Saturday, January 29. The Hawks will be back at home on Febuary 1st against the Blaze.
