Hawgs vs. Kreatures preview

April 1, 2005 - National Indoor Football League (NIFL)
Daytona Beach Hawgs News Release

KISSIMMEE – The quarterback's been in town for a week now and the franchise receiver arrives this weekend. So, of course, Daytona Beach Hawgs head coach Ervin

Bryson will stick with the running game Saturday night when the National Indoor Football League team faces the Kissimmee

Kreatures at 7 p.m. at Silver Spurs Arena.

"Brad Lee is going to get his 25 touches,'' Bryson said. "With the way he's been running the ball and a great offensiveline that includes Tommy Moody, Terrance Butler and Steve Canidate, I'd be crazy not to give him the ball."

Lee, a former Bethune-Cookman standout, has rushed for 222 yards and six touchdowns in the Hawgs' first two games – incredible numbers in a pass-happy game.

"Brad's running has given our passing game time to develop,'' Bryson said. "We'll have the complete package Saturday."

Former North Carolina star Oscar Davenport practiced just once with the team prior to last week's 54-0 rout of New Jersey. He completed his first six passes – including a touchdown to Robert Bailey – but was picked off three times and only had 73 yards. Davenport will have the services of National Indoor Football League All Star Lucas Green this time – Green missed last week's game because of complications with his airline flight.

"Having Lucas on board will open up our offense,'' Bryson said. "He knows the game and he knows the system."

Both teams are 1-1 entering the Atlantic South divisional matchup, each with a convincing rout of New Jersey. Daytona Beach's defense – led by two Micah Simmons interceptions and 6.5 tackles from Levar Simms – posted the fifth shutout in league history while the Kreatures capitalized on nine turnovers for a 64-20 decision.

However, Kissimmee gave up a league-worst 71 points in its opening loss to Montgomery, including six rushing touchdowns by Chrys Chukwuma.

"This game will be the true measuring point of where we stand,'' Bryson said.

Kissimmee is coached by Central Florida football legend Marquette Smith, who played at Florida State and UCF, then went on to play briefly with the NFL's Carolina Panthers and five other professional leagues.

"Marquette Smith has been in every league known to man,'' Bryson said. "I was flicking past Cartoon Network the other night and there he was in the Justice League with Batman and Wonder Woman. Seriously, he's one of the good guys."
