Hauswirth, IceGators Down IceFlyers

Louisiana IceGators News Release

LAFAYETTE, La.--Jake Hauswirth has been looking to have breakout game since joining the Louisiana IceGators in late December.

He finally got that chance Friday night.

Hauswirth was electric, scoring two goals in a 16 second span and contributing an assist in the IceGators' 4-3 win over the Pensacola IceFlyers.

The IceGators and the IceFlyers meet again Saturday night in the Cajundome. Game time is set for 7:05 p.m.

"Hauswirth's been playing great every game, but he took it to a new level tonight," said IceGators coach Drew Omicioli. "He played well on both ends. Those two goals set the tempo and got our guys into the game."

"We haven't been playing with leads in the previous 10 games. Getting a lead that early in the game against a team like Pensacola takes the wind out of their sails and allows the fans and the team to really get motivated."

Hauswirth's goals opened the game, coming at the 5:55 and 6:12 marks of the first period.

Brett Lutes scored a short-handed goal at the 7:47 mark of the first to put Pensacola on the board.

Louisiana responded when Jeremy Boyer tipped in a Tanner Burton shot to give the IceGators a 3-1 lead going into the first intermission.

Brett Peppler extended the lead 16 seconds into the second period with a power play goal from slot.

Pensacola fought back, getting two goals in the third from Brett Beebe and Corey Banfield in the first half of the frame. The IceGator defense played well late in the game, deflecting a number of shots in front of the net.

"I think the first 40 minutes (of this game) tops Wednesday's performance (against Mississippi)," Omicioli said. "We moved the puck extremely well from the defensive zone to create odd-man rushes that we capitalized on. We have to forget about the third period, because it turned into a 'point-night' mentality instead of sticking to the game plan. If we play (Saturday) like we played in the first two period's tonight, we'll have an even better performance."

Omicioli says his team needs to take advantage of its newfound success and keep running with it.

"It's becoming more apparent that the defensemen and the forwards have a synergy that's been missing for the last 25 games," Omicioli said. "We're a dangerous team now, and we've shown that by scoring nine goals in the last two games. We just have to keep the momentum we have right now going."
