Hartford Colonials To Hold Open Tryouts For Players In Houston
April 28, 2011 - United Football League (UFL 1)
Hartford Colonials News Release
EAST HARTFORD, CT - April 28, 2011 - The Hartford Colonials of the United Football League will hold open player tryouts on May 14 at the Houston Amateur Sports Park in Texas.
Registration will take place on-site from 10 a.m. - 12 p.m. Participants are required to pay a non-refundable $60 registration fee in cash or money order. No checks or credit cards will be accepted.
Following the registration period, tryouts will commence with the 40-yard dash on field turf. Players will then participate in a series of drills, including 1-on-1's. Tryouts are expected to conclude at approximately 4 p.m.
The tryout camp is an opportunity for free agents to showcase their talents to Colonials head coach and general manager JERRY GLANVILLE and his staff as the team looks to supplement its 2011 roster.
"We're looking to fill areas where we need help," said Glanville, the former head coach of the Houston Oilers (1985-89) and Atlanta Falcons (1990-93). "We're a team that has a lot of positions where there are some opportunities for a guy to make the squad. We're looking for depth, as well as starters. We're also looking for long snappers, punters and kickers."
The Houston Amateur Sports Park is located at the intersection of Route 288 and Airport Blvd., Houston, TX 77045. Participants are responsible for their own transportation and lodging.
Being in Houston is sure to bring back memories for Glanville from his years with the Oilers. He was hired as the team's defensive coordinator in 1984 before being promoted to head coach toward the end of the 1985 season. Under Glanville, the Oilers made the playoffs in three of his four full seasons as head coach.
"Our Houston coaching staff and the Oiler players always talk about the great fun we had in Texas. I hope [team owner] Bud Adams comes out to see us," Glanville said.
The Colonials will schedule two additional tryouts that are expected to take place in Atlanta and Connecticut. The dates and locations will be announced shortly.
A total of 672 players participated in three tryout camps for the Colonials last year, and a number of players were subsequently invited to the team's mini-camp and training camp. Running back Andre Dixon, center Tim Mattran, fullback Asaph Schwapp and cornerback Kyle Whitehurst were among the players that participated in open tryouts who made the team.
More information on tryouts can be found at www.ufl-football.com. All players must fill out an information form and workout injury waiver that must be presented at the time of registration. Forms will also be available at the tryouts.
The UFL begins its third season in August as the Colonials play an eight-game schedule against teams from Las Vegas, Omaha, Sacramento and Virginia. The 2011 schedule will be announced in the coming weeks. Fans can register for tickets for the 2011 Colonials season at www.HartfordColonials.com.
