Hartford Colonials News Release

EAST HARTFORD, CT - The Hartford Colonials signed safety Tra Battle, center Cecil Newton Jr., offensive lineman Kyle Calloway, and cornerback Chris Richards to contracts for the 2011 United Football League season. Terms of the deals are not disclosed.

Newton was a third-round pick by Hartford in the UFL Draft on May 2. His younger brother is quarterback Cam Newton, the 2010 Heisman Trophy winner and top overall pick by the Carolina Panthers in the NFL Draft. Cecil Newton was originally signed by the Jacksonville Jaguars following the 2009 NFL Draft. He spent that season on the team's practice squad before being activated to the 53-man roster for the final two weeks.

Calloway (6-6, 323) was placed on Hartford's Reserve-Unsigned list, securing his UFL rights to the Colonials. He was a seventh-round draft pick by the Buffalo Bills in 2010 following a collegiate career at Iowa in which he was a three-year starter. The Bills released him Aug. 30.

The 2011 season will mark Battle's third consecutive year in the UFL. He had 27 tackles, one interception and broke up three passes for the Colonials last season. He spent the 2009 season with the New York Sentinels, which moved to Hartford last year.

Richards was signed as a free agent by the Seattle Seahawks a year ago after he attended a three-day minicamp. After being released in August, Richards signed with the Colonial for the start of training camp and was released Sept. 8.
