Harrisburg Stampede News Release
HARRISBURG, Pennsylvania (January 25, 2009) - The Harrisburg Stampede overcame a determined group of AIFA All-Stars to win their first-ever franchise game, 46-26 in the Kickoff Classic. An enthusiastic crowd cheered loudly as the Stampede held the All-Stars to just seven second-half points in the come-from-behind victory.
The All-Stars got out of the gate quickly, with quarterback Michael Affleck sneaking in for the first score of the game. Harrisburg starting quarterback Syvelle Newton answered with a TD pass to wide receiver Mores Mayonrine, pulling the Stampede within a point at 7-6. The All-Stars answered with a pair of J.R. Cipra field goals, and an Affleck pass to Takory Burkett for a 19-6 halftime lead.
The Stampede changed to A.J. Roque at quarterback in the second half, and his previous experience (with the Florida Stingrays) loomed large in the comeback. Harrisburg pulled within a touchdown on a quarterback sneak by Roque, who fumbled the ball into the=2 0end zone. Running back and wide receiver Dave Dawson fell on the ball for the score.
The All-Stars then committed the first of seven second-half turnovers, fumbling the ball back to the Stampede. Roque then found Nijah Pruden for the tying score. The extra point by Andy Eminger gave the Stampede their first and final lead of the game.
As the All-Stars turnover problems increased, Roque connected for two more TD strikes and ran for a third. The Stampede defense provided the final score on an interception, returned for a TD.
"What a night," said AIFA co-founder and Stampede co-owner John Morris. "The fans got their first taste of our game, and they really liked it. I can't wait for the season to get underway in March!"
