Harrisburg Senators News Release
Today's Game... Tonight marks the second time this year that the Washington Nationals have sent a major league starter to rehab with the Senators. Last week RHP Pedro Astacio made a four-inning rehab start against the Senators and tonight it's former Senator Tony Armas Jr. to making a rehab start for the Senators. The Senators won the game last Wednesday that Astacio started and they will try to duplicate that feat tonight in Trenton against RHP Matt DeSalvo.
Last Time Out... Trenton's Tyler Clippard allowed a lead off single to Melvin Dorta and that was the only hit he would allow in eight strong innings as Trenton beat the Sens 4-0. Senators starter Beltran Perez pitched well enough to win, allowing just two earned runs in five innings, but he received no offensive help in the loss. Jason Norderum had his second straight strong outing out of the bullpen, going three innings and allowing just a hit while striking out two. Dorta and Seth Bynum accounted for the only two hits for Harrisburg.
Scouting the Thunder... Trenton is sending five players to the 2006 Eastern League All-Star game. They are RHP Justin Pope, LHP Charlie Manning, INF Gabe Lopez, OF Bronson Sardinha and the number #1 prospect in the Yankees organization, RHP Phil Hughes. Hughes has also been selected to participate in the Future's Game on Sunday in Pittsburgh as a member of the U.S. team. Trenton has two players on the Yankees 40-man roster and they are RHP Jeff Karstens and RHP Phil Hughes... The Thunder are coming off a successful four-game series at Portland in which they took three out of four and scored 45 runs in the four games. The only game they lost to Portland was a 14 inning, 14-13 game in which INF J.T. Stotts pitched the final inning... Since June 10 they have won 16 out of 23 games.
League Leaders... Kory Casto is tied for eighth in the league in batting (.292), tied for fourth in home runs (13), tied for first in the league in RBIs (57), first in the league in on-base percentage (.413), and second in the league in runs scored (52)... Melvin Dorta is tied for eighth in the league in batting (.292) and is fourth in the league in stolen bases (21)... Josh Whitesell is tied for fourth in home runs (13). As a team the Senators are second in the league in home runs with 71 and lead the league in saves with 32.
All-Stars... The Senators have four players named to the Southern Division All-Star squad.. RHP Kip Bouknight, INF/ OF Kory Casto, INF/OF Melvin Dorta and C Salomon Manriquez were all named to the Southern Division All-Star team. The 2006 Eastern League All-Star game is scheduled for Wednesday, July 12 in Altoona.
Harrisburg vs. Trenton... The Senators and Trenton Thunder play a total of nine times this season. The Senators won the first three games in the season series. The teams will play three more times in August at Commerce Bank Park.

Tonight's Starting Pitcher... Tony Armas Jr. is making a rehab start tonight for the Senators... Armas made 24 starts with Harrisburg in 1999 going 9-7 with a 2.89 ERA... He made his MLB debut later that same year with Montreal appearing in one game and going six innings... The 27 year old Armas was 39-48 with a 4.32 ERA prior to this season in 121 major league games, all starts... He has made a total of 103 appearances in the minors, including several rehab appearances over the past three seasons... He was originally signed by the Yankees as a non-drafted free agent in 1994 and pitched in the Yankees organization for most of three seasons before briefly joining the Red Sox organization and then finally the Expos prior to the 1998 season... He was acquired by the Expos along with Carl Pavano for Pedro Martinez in a trade between Montreal and Boston... Armas participated in the 1999 Futures Game during the All-Star weekend playing for the World Team... He played in the World Baseball Classic this past spring for Venezuela.... This season with the Nationals he is 6-4 with a 4.44 ERA in 15 starts 57K/32BB... He last appeared in a game with the Nats on June 19 at Boston going 3.2 innings and allowing 8 hits and 4 earned runs...
