HarbourCats Streak Ends with 14-Inning Loss in Yakima

The streak is over, but not without a lengthy fight.

The Victoria HarbourCats saw their season-high seven-game streak come to an end in Yakima on Monday, dropping a 6-5 game to the Yakima Valley Pippins.

It was a 14-inning game that took nearly 4.5 hours to complete, with few of the announced attendance of 898 still around to see the expansion Pippins score the winning run on a flare single to centre field.

On a hot night that eventually saw many players end up with seven trips to the plate, reliever Preston Ryan was the hard-luck loser for the HarbourCats -- he went 5.2 innings and threw 109 pitches. To put that in perspective, starter Mikey Wright tossed seven innings and 104 pitches. Both were stellar.

Sean Watkins had a solo home run in the fourth inning and the HarbourCats actually held a 5-1 lead going to the bottom half of the sixth. But Wright surrendered two runs in that inning, and reliever Alex FaGalde gave up two more in the bottom of the eighth to force free baseball time. And a lot of it.

Both teams had a runner thrown out at the plate to end an inning in extras, and the HarbourCats squandered a first-third/one-out situation with a surprising bunt attempt that was popped up, followed by a strikeout by Ryan, who had two plate appearances.

It was an odd evening for the HarbourCats lineup, as catcher Jake Lesinski was injured and forced DH Aaron Barnett into the game behind the plate. That meant Ryan came to the plate twice -- he dropped a sacrifice bunt the first time, and struck out in the 13th after third baseman Bryce Greager popped up a bunt with two runners on base, big plays that allowed Yakima to escape the inning.

Hunter Mercado-Hood was 4-7 as part of a 14-hit attack by the HarbourCats. Yakima had 15 hits. The HarbourCats used one pinch-hitter.

The HarbourCats drop to 12-13, and combined with Bellingham's 8-2 win over Kitsap now sit 7.5 games back of the 19-5 Bells. Yakima is 15-10 and leads the East Division by a game over Wenatchee.

The HarbourCats will send Alex Garcia to the mound on Tuesday in the second game of the series. The next home action for the HarbourCats is Thursday against Medford on World Record Pitch Day, sponsored by Peninsula Co-op, at Sports Traders Diamond.
