Alabama Hammers News Release
RICHMOND, Va. - The struggles continue for the Alabama Hammers. The Hammers fell behind, rallied, then faded in a 54-29 loss before 2,505 fans in the Richmond Coliseum on Saturday night.
Alabama quarterback Bill Ashburn completed 22 of 45 passes for 237 yards and four touchdowns, while former UNA receiver Charles McClain caught 11 passes for 105 and three touchdowns. Former Auburn standout Marquies Gunn and West Alabama star Gary Pack had two sacks each as the Hammers fell to 0-3, while Richmond improved to 3-1. Alabama travels to Albany, Ga., next weekend before hosting the Columbus Lions April 21 at the Von Braun Center.
Ashburn's 17-yard scoring pass to Willie Quinnie tied the game at 6-all before McClain's 8-yard pass and Will Batson's kick with 5:51 left made it a 23-13 game at the half. Batson's 25-yard kick pulled the Hammers within seven points at the half, but it was all Richmond from there.
