Corpus Christi Hammerheads News Release

ROBSTOWN - The Corpus Christi Hammerheads score four rushing touchdowns and held the Alaska Wild to only seven fourth quarter points to win a 50-35 thriller in the Central Pavilion Arena Saturday. After Corpus Christi raced out to a 28-7 halftime lead, Alaska responded with a 21-point third quarter to make the evening interesting, even coming within seven of the lead late in the game. The Hammerheads' defense answered by shutting down the Wild in the fourth. The Hammerheads improve to 2-0 going into an early bye next week. For Alaska, the loss was their second with in a week. The Wild lost to Frisco last Sunday.

Corpus Christi running back Redford Borel, who had only four carries for minimal yardage a week ago, scored twice and ended the game with eight carries for 54 yards. His first carry of the night was a brillant jaunt in which he weaved his way through the Wilds' defense for a 12-yard toucdown. Schuyler Anderson and Fred Wallace scored the Hammerheads other rushing touchdowns.

The Wilds' defense slowed the Hammerheads by harassing Dustin Almond all night. He was sacked three time and intercepted once. He did complete 17 or 33 passes for 156 yards and three touchdowns. Almond did come through when Corpus Christi needed him most. After Alaska cut Christi Christi's lead to just seven with Nick Mystrom's eight-yard touchdown pass to Nian Taylor with more than three minutes left in the game, Almond completed his longest pass of the night - a 25-yard scoring strike to Ed Giddings. It was Giddings third touchdown catch of the night. He led the Hammerheads' receiving corps with six catches for 68 yards. Anderson had five catches for 37 and Johnny Anderson had three for 24. Darrell Perkins and Matt Ross also logged receptions. The Hammerheads will be back in action April 5 here at home against the Fairbanks Grizzlies. Kick off is 6:05 p.m.
