Corpus Christi Hammerheads News Release
CORPUS CHRISTI - The Corpus Christi Hammerheads added some NFL experience to their offensive line with the signing of former Chicago Bear Walter Wigfall.
The former All-American lineman from Texas A&M University-Kingsville was one of two players signed by the Intense Football League team this week, Hammerheads owner Chad Dittman announced. The other player is former Texas Lutheran University standout receiver Jason Trahan.
Wigfall started on Corpus Christi's offensive line for half of 2007 before a season-ending injury. The 6-foot-6 Katy native is expected to return this season close to his college playing weight of 350 pounds.
"He's slimmed down and is in great shape," Dittman said. "We're expecting some great things from Walter this season. He's going to be a cornerstone of our offense."
Wigfall's contributions last season helped make the Hammerheads the IFL's top offense and gave the team the league's most potent running game. Wigfall remains one of TAMUK's greatest linemen. He earned First Team All Lone Star Conference honors in 2001 and 2002. During his senior year with the Javelinas, Wigfall was also named All-American and the Lone Star Conference's Offensive Lineman of the Year. The Chicago Bears signed Wigfall in 2003. In 2005, they assigned him to the Cologne Centurions of NFL Europe. He later played for Grand Rapids in the AFL before joining the Hammerheads after the start of last season.
Trahan (5-11, 175) is expected to strengthen the team's receiving corps. As a senior at Texas Lutheran, the Pearland product was the team's biggest offensive weapon. His big-play ability made him a threat from any part of the field and helped earn him American Southwest Conference All-Conference honors.
He left TLU as the school's all-time career receiving leader.
"Jason is going to compliment our group of receivers very well," Dittman said. "He is certainly a fine addition to our club."
