Wilmington Hammerheads FC News Release
Wilmington, NC - Wilmington Hammerheads FC forward Nick Zimmerman has announced his retirement from soccer and will join Clayton State University women's soccer team as an assistant coach. Zimmerman's professional career spanned six years in the United States, including stints with three different leagues.
"Nick has known for a long time that when his playing career ended he would enter the coaching ranks," said Wilmington Hammerheads FC Technical Director and Head Coach Carson Porter. "Knowing this, when he was offered a full-time coaching position he was forced to make the hard decision to end his playing career and enter the coaching ranks."
Clayton State is a Division II school located in Morrow, Georgia. The team's first match of the season is scheduled for Friday, August 28.
"There was a tight timeline on the decision because the collegiate season is starting soon," said Porter. "Nick has decided to take it, and we wish him the very best."
Zimmerman made 14 appearances during his time with the Hammerheads, tallying three goals overall during the season. Prior to joining the club in Wilmington, Zimmerman spent four seasons in the North American Soccer League with the Carolina RailHawks. He made 60 appearances and scored 21 goals during his time with the club and was named Most Valuable Player in 2012.
Prior to his long-term stint with the RailHawks, Zimmerman made his professional debut after being drafted in the third round of the 2009 MLS SuperDraft by New York Red Bulls. He was later picked up by Philadelphia Union in the 2009 MLS Expansion Draft and loaned to the Harrisburg City Islanders during the 2010 season.
