Hammerheads fall one point short
March 27, 2005 - National Indoor Football League (NIFL)
Corpus Christi Hammerheads News Release
The Corpus Christi Hammerheads trailed the Tri-Cities Fever the entire game. Down 27-14 at Half Time, the Hammerheads turned it around in the second Half. Sparked by an interception return for a touchdown, the Hammerheads went on an offensive surge. Catapulted by repeated lengthy returns by Johnny Smith, running back Fred Wallace pounded the ball, scoring touchdown after touchdown.
The Fever matched every score the Hammerheads threw at them until a key stop was made by the Hammerheads defense with 2 minutes to go in the game. Things were looking up for the Hammerheads as they took over on offense with the score 47-40 Fever. All they needed to do was score to tie, or go for the win. The Hammerheads went to the big power I set they used most of the game with Chester "Jun-Jun" Jones, Jr., Hershel McCurn, and big Fred Wallace in the backfield. The Hammerheads marched down the field in fine fashion, putting their 2-minute offense to work.
Fred Wallace crossed the goal line with less than a minute to go to make the score 46-47 Fever. Coach McKinley sends in Oscar Moreno to tie and settle this outstanding game in an extra frame. With the crowd roaring to a deafening decibel, in this the inaugural game for the Tri-Cities Fever, the ball is snapped, the hold is down...and just like that a valiant comeback is reduced to a disappointing "could have been." The kick is no good, the Fever win 46-47.
The Hammerheads (1-1) look to gain renewed confidence as they take on the lowly San Angelo Stampede (0-2) at 5:05 on Sunday, April 3 at the American Bank Center in Corpus Christi. The Stampede are trying to piece together their game plan fresh off taking a shellacking by the Wyoming Cavalry 68-7. Tickets to the game start at only $9.50 and can be purchased at the American Bank Center Box Office, at the Hammerheads Office located in Sunrise Mall, at www.ticketmaster.com, or any Ticketmaster Outlet.
