Newport Gulls News Release
NEWPORT, R.I. - Newport defeated the Martha's Vineyard Sharks on Monday night 3-2 to knot up the best of three series at one. For the Gulls, Justin Cherry picks up the win as Daniel Hegarty picks up the loss for the Sharks.
The Gulls struck first in the bottom of the first off of an RBI single from Hayden Jones that scored Greg Cavaliere to make it 1-0. They would then go on to tack on two more runs in the second thanks to an RBI infield single by Cavaliere and a sacrifice fly from Chris Hamilton that scored Isaiah Thomas.
Down 3-0 heading into the third, the Sharks would take a bit out of the Gulls lead, scoring two runs in the inning. Collin Shapiro, Matthew Chamberlain, and Nicholas Raposo would all double in a row to make it a 3-2 ballgame. Despite the minor blemishes in the third inning, Cherry would be lights out for the Gulls, retiring seven out of the next nine batters.
Newport would then call on Jordan Marks out of the bullpen to hold their one-run lead. Marks would do just that as he gave up no runs on one hit, striking out four in four innings of work. Marks would also have a lot of help in the field as the Gulls would turn a dropped third strike into a double-play, throwing out Jackson Raper at third. Later on in the ninth, the defense would assist Marks once again as Nander De Sedas would crush a ball to the fence in center. Cavaliere, however, played the ball off the centerfield fence and then made the throw to Scott Holzwasser at second, who tagged out De Sedas for the second out of the inning.
Newport will now play the Martha's Vineyard Sharks again tomorrow in the final game of the three-game series in a 7 pm matchup at the Shark Tank.
