Gulls Strohschein Garners National Accolades

NEWPORT, R.I. - Newport Gulls outfielder Kevin Strohschein (Tennessee Tech) was named the 2016 Louisville Slugger National Freshman Co-Player of the Year and Freshman All-American, as announced by College Baseball newspaper on Wednesday afternoon. Strohschein shared the national honor with Clemson outfielder Seth Beer.
Strohschein, who hails from McDonough, Georgia, comes to the Gulls following his successful freshman campaign for the Tennessee Tech Golden Eagles where he started the season slow, batting .242 with three home runs and 12 RBI through his first 16 games. Strohschein found his rhythm at the plate over his final 37 games when we posted three separate consecutive-game hit streaks of nine, 10 and 15 games.
Strohschein set six different Tennessee Tech freshman records during his 2016 campaign while leading the team in nine offensive categories. Strohschein set single season freshman records for hits (90), doubles (21), home runs (15), runs batted in (73), runs scored (57) and total bases (162). Strohschein's 90 base hits are tied for the third most in program history.
On May 24, Strohschein became the first player in the history of the Ohio Valley Conference (OVC) to be named OVC Player and OVC Freshman of the Year in the same season. Strohschein also garnered OVC Player of the Week honors twice, as well as being named Louisville Slugger National Player of the Week on May 9 after hitting .818 (9-for-11) with six runs scored, three doubles and two home runs while slugging 1.636 with five RBI.
Fans can see Strohschein in action for the first time this season as the Newport Gulls begin the 2016 summer season on Friday, June 10 at Cardines Field at 6:35 p.m. Gates open at 5 p.m. for "Discover Newport Opening Night 2016." The Gulls are giving away free magnet schedules to the first 1,000 fans through the gates, courtesy of Blue Plate Diner.
