SAN DIEGO â The San Diego Gulls have signed defenseman Mike Garrow, the West Coast Hockey League club announced today. Garrow was last season's WCHL Rookie of the Year.
Garrow, 27, comes to the Gulls after spending parts of last season with the Colorado Gold Kings and American Hockey League's Utah Grizzlies. In 55 games for Colorado, Garrow netted 42 points (14g, 28a) en route to being named the WCHL Rookie of the Year. In 11 games with Utah, he notched four points (1g, 3a).
"Mike is a strong, physical player and a top offensive defenseman," Gulls head coach and General Manager Steve Martinson said. "He had an excellent year in Colorado last season and we expect him to add a lot to our lineup."
The 6-foot-1-inch, 210-pound native of Kenora, Ontario made his professional debut in 2000-01 after playing three seasons at the University of Alberta. During his collegiate career, Garrow recorded 95 points in 118 games with the Alberta Golden Bears. He was also selected as an all-star each of his three seasons with the University of Alberta. Martinson said he expects Garrow to open training camp with Utah this season.
The Gulls open training camp for the 2002-03 season Sept. 27. Their eighth season in the WCHL officially begins Saturday, Oct. 12 versus the Long Beach Ice Dogs. Season ticket packages are currently on sale. Contact a Gulls ticket representative at 619-224-4625 ext. 7 for more information.
