Newport Gulls News Release

NEWPORT, R.I. - It was all Newport (12-7) from the get-go in its 8-0 victory over Bristol (4-16). The Gulls rode a 14-hit performance and lights-out pitching to move to 3-0 against the Blues and pick up their first shutout of the summer.

Kellan Tulio got the start and picked up right where he left off in Danbury. The Louisville Cardinal had another dominant performance, going five innings, and yielding just two hits and no runs. It was another high strikeout night for the lefty who fanned nine, adding to his tally of 19 over his last two starts, and lowering his ERA to 1.42.

Tulio was supported right away by his bats. The Gulls broke through in the bottom of the second thanks to a two-RBI single from CJ Pittaro, who continued a dominant stretch of 8-for-12 against the Blues this season.

A night after being the Southcoast Health Player of the Game, Kenny Oyama shined again for the Gulls, following Pittaro with an RBI single, and making it 3-0. It was one of two RBI singles for the center fielder, who finished 3 for 4.

An inning later, Newport found some more two-out magic. Matt Wood scorched a two-RBI double, highlighting the catcher's best performance so far this summer. Wood went 4-5 on the night and the two-bagger made it 5-0 Gulls. Pittaro found his second hit of the night two batters later, connecting on an RBI single to make it 6-0.

Tulio exited after the fifth, giving way to Daniel Colwell. In his first appearance at Cardines Field, the lefty looked as comfortable as ever, striking out the side in both innings seven and eight. Along with those six punchouts, the UCLA Bruin allowed just two runs and kept Bristol scoreless.

The Gulls are back at it tomorrow on the road and look for their first win of the season over the Danbury Westerners (10-7). First pitch from Rogers Park is at 6:30pm.
