Newport Gulls News Release
DANBURY, C.T. - Newport's season came to a close with a 6 to 1 defeat to the Danbury Westerners in the single-elimination wild card round of the 2021 NECBL Playoffs at Rogers Park Tuesday night.
After Spenser Smith walked and Bryce Hulett singled, Conor Kiely got the Gulls on the board in the fourth, opening the scoring with a two-out single into center field to bring Smith home and making it 1-0 Gulls.
Grayson Moore started on the mound for the Gulls and began strong, firing four shutout innings and giving up just one hit going into the fifth.
Danbury's Sebastian Murrillo hit a solo home run to tie the game in the inning before the Westerners struck for two more in the sixth to take a lead they would not relinquish. Daniel Colwell pitched the final frame for the Gulls and struck out the side.
Thank you to all the players, coaches, staff, volunteers, host families, sponsors, and fans for making the memorable 20th anniversary season and the return of the Newport Gulls in 2021 possible. See you at Cardines Field in 2022.
