Gulls Fall to Westerners 9-4

NEWPORT, R.I. - Newport(2 -3) fell 9-4 to the Danbury Westerners (5 -0) on Town of Middletown Night at Cardines Field. For the Westerners, Justin Campbellpicks up the win as Art Joven is saddled with the loss for the Gulls.

The Westerners bats gotthings going in the top of the second as Jay Curtis IV launched a two-run home run to left field. The Gulls, however, would strike back in thebottom of the third after Jacob Gustin put the Gulls on the board with anRBI single. Later in the inning Joey Bellini would groundout into a fielders choice, scoring GregCavaliere.

The Gulls would jump out toa 3-2 lead in the bottom of the fourth thanks to another fielders choice after a grounder by Zaid Walker thatscored Brett Vosik. That would be short-lived however as Cameron Cerruto came through with a three-runhome run to give the Westerners a 5-3 lead.

The Westerners would tack onmore runs in the top of eighth after Justin Jordan scored on a past ball and Curtis IV would later double, scoring two runs. Curtis IVwould later score on a wild pitch. In the bottom of the eighth Walker would try to start aGulls rally with an RBI single to cut the Westerners lead to 9-4. However, the Gullscouldn't rally back as Joe Vail would close out the game for the Westerners.
