Newport Gulls News Release
NEWPORT, R.I. - Newport (5-4) rallied in the ninth inning, but it was ultimately the Mystic Schooners (8-2) that came away with a 16-8 win in 10 innings at Cardines Field Wednesday Night.
The Gulls got on the scoreboard first when Chris Hamilton and Colton Bender hit back-to-back doubles to give Newport a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first. Both Hamilton and Bender had strong multi-hit games and reached base a combined six times.
Mystic immediately answered with a two-RBI single from Vincent Martin to give the Schooners a 2-1 advantage in the top of the second inning. Neither team had more than a two-run lead until the 10th inning, as the teams traded runs.
Newport trailed 6-5 and was down to their last strike of the game in the ninth inning when a clutch single from Ryan Toohers drove in Hamilton and tied the game at six.
The Gulls were on the verge of a walk-off victory on the very next at-bat when Austin James knocked a single into left field, but a throw from Schooners left fielder Nolan Kissinger was right on target and Toohers was tagged out at home plate, sending the game to extra innings.
Mystic capitalized on the game-saving throw from Kissinger, as the team put up 10 runs in the 10th inning, including a grand slam to help seal the victory.
Newport is back in action Thursday Night when they travel to Old Mountain Field to take on the Ocean State Waves (4-6) at 6:30 pm.
