San Diego Gulls News Release
SAN DIEGO -- Chris Marinucci and Joe Rybar scored three points apiece to lead the Idaho Steelheads to a 4-2 victory over the San Diego Gulls Saturday night, before 10,423 at the San Diego Sports Arena. The loss drops San Diego six points behind Idaho for first place in the West Coast Hockey League
The Steelheads (8-3-1) jumped out to a 2-0 lead in a fast-paced first period. Marinucci got things started for Idaho, netting his first goal of the night at 13:53. Scott Swanson and Rybar earned the assists. Idaho then capitalized on a late Gulls penalty and took a two-goal lead. Marty Flichel took a pass from Swanson and blasted a slap shot past a stretched out Trevor Koenig at 19:14. Rybar, who won the end zone faceoff back to Swanson, also assisted on Flichel's first tally of the game.
Idaho scored again six minutes into the middle period to take a 3-0 lead. Marinucci potted his second of the game - fourth of the season - finishing off a two-on-one rush with Cory Morgan.
But the Gulls (5-5-1) then answered quickly with two goals - both on the power play - in a 1:28 span, cutting the margin to one. Dean Tiltgen struck first for the Blue and Orange at 7:56 of the second, chipping the puck over the pads of Steelheads netminder Jason Cugnet. Ryan Fultz and Sylvain Deschatelets assisted on Tiltgen's sixth goal. Mike Garrow made it 3-2 at 9:24 with his fifth goal. Idaho's Matt Martin was attempting to clear the zone, but his pass deflected off Garrow's stick and into the net.
Flichel's second goal of the contest - fifth of the campaign - regained Idaho's two-goal cushion with a power-play goal at 15:33. Rybar registered his third assist of the game, while Marinucci also notched his third point of the game with the second assist.
That would prove too much for the Gulls to overcome as Cugnet slammed the door in the third period ensuring the 4-2 Idaho win.
