Newport Gulls News Release

NEWPORT, R.I. - In a game that saw the Cardines Field scoreboard almost entirely filled with zeros, Newport (10-7) fell to Danbury (9-7) 4 to 1 Monday night.

Brandyn Garcia made his fourth start of the season for the Gulls and pitched four innings. Newport's opening night arm made it through the first three frames scoreless before Danbury broke through with four in the fourth, three earned It would be the only runs the Westerners scored all night. The Quinnipiac lefty finished with three strikeouts.

Newport's bullpen held its own and kept the Gulls in the game. Liam LeVangie pitched three shutout innings and struck out six, lifting his season total to 17 in just 12 innings.

LeVangie gave way to another big strikeout arm, Grant Umberger who faced three batters in the 8th and struck out the side, blowing his fastball by Westerners hitters and extending his total to an absurd 17 strikeouts in eight innings.

Offensively, Newport broke through in the sixth. After a walk from Matt Wood and a single from Spenser Smith, Jordon Rogers brought home the Gulls' lone run on an RBI-single. Newport had another opportunity an inning later after loading the bases, but the Westerners averted the threat.

The Gulls are on the road tomorrow to make their second trip to Martha's Vineyard for a matchup with the Sharks (11-5). First pitch from the Shark Tank is at 7:00pm.
