
Gulls Come up Short Versus Bay Sox

NEWPORT, R.I. -The Newport defense struggled as the Gulls fell to the New Bedford Bay Sox (10-8) by a score of 8-6 on Wednesday night. Newport committed six errors, including three in the first two innings resulting in a total of seven unearned runs.
The Gulls trailed 5-0 after two innings but eventually got the offense going, scoring a pair of runs in the third then one in the fourth on a Stevie Mangrum home run. Newport added one more in the fifth to make it 5-4, but New Bedford answered back with three runs of its own to extend the lead to 8-4. Dalton Reed and Cole Austin both reached base in their pinch-hit opportunities in the eighth helping the Gulls pull to within two runs. Newport could not get anything going in the ninth as they went down 1-2-3. CJ Dandeneau picked up the save for the Bay Sox.
Russell Smith wore the loss for Newport surrendering five runs, none earned, on four hits in 1.2 innings pitched. Jeremiah Burke was solid in relief surrendering three hits in 3.1 shutout innings. Nic Enright pitched the final 1.2 innings, striking out three without surrendering a hit.
The Gulls return to action on Thursday night at Forges Field when it faces off against a Plymouth Pilgrims (10-6) team that currently lead the New England Collegiate Baseball League with a 2.74 earned-run average.
