Newport Gulls News Release
NEWPORT, R.I. - For a fifth straight home game to open up the season, the bats were the story for Newport (9-3) in its 12-10 win over Valley (9-5). The win is the third straight for the Gulls and keeps Kevin Winterrowd's team in first place in the Southern Division.
After the Blue Sox opened the scoring in the top of the third, Newport roared back in the bottom frame with five runs. Big innings was the theme of the night for the Gulls, who after scoring five in the third, scored four in the fifth, and three more in the sixth.
In the third, Dawson Brigman got the party started with a two-RBI double that chased home two Newport runs and gave the Gulls a lead they would never end up relinquishing. Peter Serruto put a bow on the frame with an RBI single to make it 5-1 Gulls.
After Valley cut the lead to just one, Newport responded once again in the bottom of the fifth. Run-scoring doubles from Bryce Hulett and CJ Pittaro, followed by an RBI base hit from Jordon Rogers, gave Newport some insurance, and made it a 9-4 lead.
Just an inning later, the offense returned in grand fashion. Sam Cochrane connected on an RBI double, and one batter after, Justin Guerrera crushed a two-run home run well out of Cardines Field for his second long ball in as many days, adding to his team leads of four homers and 13 RBIs. With 12 runs tonight, Newport is averaging nearly 10 runs per game at home this season.
The Gulls and Blue Sox are right back at it Wednesday night for another matchup at Cardines Field. First pitch is at 6:35pm.
