
Guerrero Leads Gary to 4-3 Walk Off Victory Over Joliet

GARY, IN - Cristian Guerrero lined a single to left to score Mike Massaro from second as the Gary SouthShore RailCats (48-43) moved back into third place with a 4-3 victory Saturday night over the Joliet JackHammers (48-44) at U. S. Steel Yard. The RailCats are a half game up on the JackHammers for third place.
Mike Massaro led off the ninth with a walk against Erik Hamren (0-2). Jay Pecci singled past a charging Brad Correll from third to put two runners on with nobody out. Griffin Bailey came on and Guerrero singled into left field, scoring Massaro just ahead of the throw from Jonathan Wyatt for the victory.
The JackHammers again started the scoring with two in the second off Willie Glen. Freddie Thon singled and Chris Colton followed with a fielder's choice, moving to second on a walk to Richard Mercado. After Roberto Mena struck out, Josh Flores doubled to straight away center field to score both runners for a 2-0 lead.
Gary responded with three in the bottom of the second against Rory Shortell, sending nine hitters to the plate. Randall Simon led off with a walk and advanced to second on a Louis Ott single. Mike Rohde knocked in the first run with a single and John Parham tied the game with a double to right. The RailCats loaded the bases and Pecci was hit by a pitch to force in the third run.
Shortell started the fourth inning, but didn't record an out. Rohde was hit by a pitch and Parham reached on a sacrifice bunt that Shortell threw wide of first base. Adam Klein walked to load the bases and Brian Gartley entered out of the bullpen. The lefty retired the next three hitters in order, getting two fly outs by Massaro and Pecci and a strikeout of Guerrero.
Joliet would tie the game in the seventh at three on a Thon single to left center. Kevin Rios and Correll led off with consecutive singles with Rios scoring on the Thon base hit off Chris Chavez.
Shortell lasted three innings, allowing three runs on three hits with four hits, two hit batters and two strikeouts.
Gartley tossed two scoreless innings with Paul Fagan going a scoreless inning and a third. Hamren took the loss, surrendering two hits and one run while striking out three in 1.2 innings.
Andy Shipman (4-2) earned the victory with a scoreless ninth inning while Glen took a no-decision. The right-hander went 5.2 frames allowing two runs on seven hits with four strikeouts and three walks.
Thon led the âHammers with three while Flores drove home a team high two runs.
The JackHammers and RailCats will meet in a rubber game tomorrow afternoon in Gary. Bear Bay (8-5) will look for his ninth victory against Brad Halsey (6-6). First pitch is set for 2:00 p.m. with a 1:50 p.m. pre-game show on 1320 WKAN and www.wkan.com.
