
Guard Loses To Rome Again

It looked as if The Fayetteville Guard would get its vengance against the Rome Rengades Sunday night but a 14-yard field goal was the deciding factor for a 48-45 lose.
The Guard scored its first touchdown near the two-minute warning on a 2-yard run by Joe Davis and the score was 19-13 after the PAT. The teams scored twice more each in the half, leaving Rome with a 25-23 halftime lead.
Rome (4-3, 3-0) and Fayetteville (1-6, 1-3) traded field goals over the first few minutes of the match-up, the second of the two teams of the 2005 season. The game was tied 3-3 with 6:40 left in the first half.
Fayetteville's Shawn Thomas kicked his second field goal near the eight minute mark, in the second quarter, to cut the gap to 16-6. Rome pushed their lead to 19-6 with 6:26 left in the half on a 30-yard field goal.
Fayetteville cut the lead to seven on a run by Brian Baker with 9:36 to go in the third quarter. The Renegades countered with a 20-yard pass and it was 45-31 after the PAT. Fayetteville scored twice more in the final 5:25 to send the game into overtime tied 45-45.
Rome's defense held during the Guard's overtime possession and the Renegades moved it down the field in four plays and set up Brian Tracy's game-winning 14-yard kick. The final kick, in overtime, Sunday the Renegades earned a 48-45 win over the visiting Fayetteville Guard and took the NIFL's Atlantic Central Division title.
The Guard will be on the road once again next week to Kissimmee, Florida.
