
Ground Breaking at Airmen Pond at Bowman Field Today

WILLIAMSPORT, P.A. - In a long awaited joint effort, the Williamsport Ice Arena Non-Profit Organization, the Williamsport Outlaws Professional Hockey Club and the City of Williamsport will break ground today at the site of Airman Pond at Bowman Field at 1700 West Fourth Street in Williamsport.
Arriving this morning to Bowman Field with tractor trailers full of equipment ready to break ground were Rich Cubin, Vice-President of Rink Specialists and his crew to start the 12 day process of erecting the first Ice Arena in Williamsport history. According to Williamsport Ice Arena Non-Profit Organization President Don Kirnan,"The platform staging layout, plumbing hook ups and the overall logistics of the 20,000 square foot stage for the ice arena arebeing laid out today."
The ice rink is scheduled to be completed by October 12thin time for the Williamsport Outlaws Professional Hockey Team to open up their 2012 training camp.Along with the Outlaws, Airman Pond at Bowman Field will become the new home to its community for the public to use throughout the winter months for public skating, Youth hockey and figure skating, adult hockey and numerous outside events.
When asked about the public use of the rinkKirnanreplied,"We are excited to introduce winter skating to Lycoming County and the great city of Williamsport this year with the hopes of a permanent facility next year."Kirnancommented, "It (Williamsport) has been a northern city with no ice rink. Youth organizations have been trying for 15 to 20 years to get an ice pad built."Kirnanadded,"This is an exciting time for Williamsport and its surrounding communities."

Open skates will be held every night from 7-9pm during the week and twice on both Saturdays and Sundays, with extended holiday hours. Kirnan added. "With the availability of Airman Pond, it allows the availability and the opportunity for the growth of youth figure skating and youth hockey in the Williamsport area. Training programs for adults who want to coach figure skating and youth hockey have already begun. Also a registration through USA Hockey has already been complete," saidKirnan, when talking about the new opportunities for the area's youth.
There will be aseniorleague fielded that will have four to six teams that will play their games and practice at the complex.
Kirnansummed up his statement with, "When people see our youth on the ice, when they see the team and the other opportunities that come with the rink, you will see a tremendous demand."
The Williamsport Outlaws open their FHL schedule on October 24that 7:05pm, when they welcome in the Dayton Devils to Airman Pond at Bowman Field. As they get ready to defend their 2012 Commissioner's Cup Championship.
