Gateway Grizzlies News Release

The Gateway Grizzlies rallied all the way back from a 6-0 deficit in one inning, scoring seven times in the sixth to go ahead at Bosse Field on Friday night, but it was still not enough, as a late home run sent them to their ninth straight defeat against the Evansville Otters this season and third straight loss overall by a final score of 9-7.

The Otters used the home run to go ahead, scoring two runs in the first, including a solo shot by Zach Biermann. An Elijah MacNamee solo homer would make it 3-0, and after the Otters got a pair of runs in the fourth thanks to an RBI triple and wild pitch, yet another solo bomb by J.R. Davis made the score 6-0 after five frames.

Held to just two singles and no runs to that point, Gateway would erupt in the sixth inning for one of their biggest frames of the year. After a pair of leadoff hits, Zach Racusin got Gateway on the board with an RBI double. Three batters later, after a single by Trevor Achenbach loaded the bases, Clint Freeman hit an RBI single to right field that made it 6-2. Ian Bibiloni was then hit by a pitch to force in another run and make it 6-3, and after the Otters made a pitching change, Abdiel Diaz came up and cleared the bases with a dramatic, game-tying, three-run triple to make it 6-6. Andrew Penner followed two batters later with a go-ahead RBI triple of his own, as Gateway took a 7-6 lead.

But like so many times before this season against the Otters for Gateway, the home team came back. In the eighth, George Callil hit a two-run home run off Nick Kennedy (1-1), putting the Otters ahead to stay. They would also get an insurance run on a sacrifice fly in the ninth for the final margin, taking the series opener at Bosse Field.

The Grizzlies will look to bounce back on Saturday, August 6, at 6:35 p.m. CT, with Brendan Feldmann looking to play the role of stopper on the mound.
