Florence Y'alls News Release

SAUGET, IL - Florence scored the first three runs against the Gateway Grizzlies tonight but could not hold on for the win in a 4-3 defeat at GCS Credit Union Ballpark.

Florence wraps up the season series versus Gateway with a 5-3 record against the Grizzlies. Three of those wins came on the road.

After a scoreless first three innings, the Y'alls (34-50) broke the ice by loading the bases in the fourth inning and scoring the game's first run on a Rodney Tennie hit by pitch. One inning later, Ethan Stern hit his second home run in as many games to bring home two more runs to extend the lead to 3-0.

Gateway (39-46) answered right back with two runs in the bottom of the fifth to cut into the deficit, and scored one run in each of the next two innings after that to take a 4-3 lead. Abdiel Diaz drove in the game's winning run with a RBI single.

JP Williams earns the win for Gateway thanks to seven strong innings, striking out five in a much-needed lengthy outing after Gateway needed five pitchers to get through yesterday's lopsided Florence win. Sam Gardner and John Murphy combined for two scoreless innings and four strikeouts to close out the game, with Murphy earning his eighth save of the season.

Edgar Martinez struck out seven in five innings of work in the no-decision. Kent Klyman takes the loss for allowing the seventh inning run. Rodney Tennie had two more hits for Florence, and Craig Massey stroked a double to extend his hitting streak to five games. Alberti Chavez has now hit safely in seven consecutive games.

Florence stays on the road for a meeting with Evansville to wrap up the final road trip of the 2022 season. Bobby Brabrand gets the ball tomorrow, Friday, August 26, for the first of three games against the Otters. First pitch is at 6:35 PM CDT.
