San Jose SaberCats News Release
SAN JOSE, Calif. (October 17, 2007) - Several key members of the San Jose SaberCats 2007 ArenaBowl championship team, including both quarterbacks, will be available for free agency when the AFL free agent signing period begins on October 29.
Mark Grieb, who set a SaberCats' season record with 100 touchdown passes last season and holds virtually every team game, season and career passing record, heads the list of available free agent quarterbacks. His backup from 2007, Craig Whelihan, is also a free agent.
Grieb, the former Oak Grove High School and UC Davis standout, has spent the last nine seasons with San Jose guiding the franchise to ArenaBowl titles in 2004 and 2007 earning Offensive MVP honors on both occasions. In 2002, Grieb was named the league's Offensive Player of the Year, but missed the team's first championship run after sustaining a broken collarbone in the next-to-last game of the regular season.
Two of Grieb's top receiving targets from last season are also on the free agent market.
Former Fresno State star Rodney Wright finished third on the team with career-highs of 98 receptions and 1,076 yards. Also a kick return threat, the third-year AFL'er had three kickoff return scores while averaging nearly 23 yards in his 31 returns.
Ben Nelson followed his 2006 AFL Rookie of the Year season with a 101-catch campaign in 2007. Nelson totaled 1,257 yards and 25 touchdowns while playing in just 11 games.
Defensive linemen George Williams and Tim Martin, offensive lineman Chuck Reed, and fullback Matt Kinsinger are the other SaberCats eligible for free agency.
Several former SaberCats, including former San Jose State all-purpose performer Charles Pauley and Barry Wagner, are available free agents. A complete team-by-team list of free agents is available at www.arenafootball.com.
A premier franchise in the AFL, the San Jose SaberCats have captured three ArenaBowl titles, seven Western Division championships, eight consecutive playoff appearances and own the league's best regular season record this decade.
