Evansville BlueCats News Release
EVANSVILLE, IN: The Evansville BlueCats couldn't catch up to the Ohio Valley Greyhounds at the end of Saturday's game at Roberts Stadium. The Greyhounds were able to stop the BlueCats on a two-point conversion try in the 4th quarter and run out the clock to hang on and defeat Evansville 47-45. Ten of the BlueCats 12 possessions in the game resulted in points for Evansville compared only 7 of Ohio Valley's 11 possessions. The difference came with the BlueCats trading field goals for touchdowns. The BlueCats scored 6 field goals and 4 touchdowns in the game compared to Ohio Valley scoring 7 touchdowns. Despite allowing 3 more touchdowns, Evansville only lost by 2 points. The defense stopped Ohio Valley 4 times, 3 times on downs and once with an interception. Evansville scored touchdowns on their last 3 possessions to pull within 2 points late in the game but the 2 point conversion try failed and Ohio Valley was able to run out the clock for the win. The game moves both Evansville and Ohio Valley to (3-5) on the year, tied for second in the UIF East Division Standings.
The BlueCats were led by a magnificent record breaking performance by kicker Ton-Ton Luzayadio who connected on all 6 of his field goal tries, a new team and league for field goals in a single game. He was also 3-3 on his extra point kicks. Luzayadio was a perfect 9-9 on his kicking attempts in the game, scoring an incredible 21 points in the game. He now leads all players in the league with 102 points scored this season. His heroics two weeks ago single "footedly" defeated the Fort Wayne Freedom on a last second 46-yard field goal. Down by two in the final minute, the BlueCats were eagerly anticipating his opportunity to do it again against the Greyhounds but Ohio Valley managed to get a critical first down with under a minute to go and run out the clock before he got his chance.
Wide Receiver Levander Segars had 8 receptions for 45 yards and 2 touchdowns to lead the BlueCats offense. He was the favorite target of quarterback Aaron Leak who completed 23 of his 35 passes for 125 yards, 3 touchdowns, and 2 interceptions. Leak also rushed for 51 yards and a touchdown.
Running back Dale Jennings finished the game with 84 all-purpose yards to lead all players. He caught 5 passes for 39 yards, rushed for 10 yards, and had 35 kickoff return yards in the game. He was held out of the endzone for only the second time this season.
The BlueCats defense recorded 6 tackles for loss and 3 sacks against the Greyhounds, led by defensive end Demoine Adams, who made 4 solo tackles, including 3 tackles for loss and 2 sacks. Adams also forced a fumble. John Winchester finished the game with 10 total tackles including one tackle for loss and a broken up pass. Damien Jones and Tarron Acuff had 5 total tackles each, Jones also had 2 pass break ups. Vernon Turner had 2 tackles, a pass break up, and made the only interception for the BlueCats, which he returned for 25 yards.
Ohio Valley was led by quarterback Matt Kohn, who passed 176 yards on 23-34 passing, for 4 touchdowns and one interception. He also rushed for 47 yards and 3 touchdowns.
