Greg Sutton could tie record Saturday

MONTREAL, July 27, 2004 â Greg Sutton has 12 shutouts so far this year and he is only one away from the club record of 13 in a season, set in 1996 by Paolo Ceccarelli.
The Impact goalkeeper could therefore tie the record this Wednesday night, as Montreal will be hosting the Charleston Battery at Claude Robillard Sports Complex (7:30 pm, CJAD, CKAC).
"It's a good accomplishment for the team, it reflects our solid defensive play and the success we've had in the back all year long," commented Sutton about his 12 shutouts, a personal high.
Patrick Leduc insists, however, that Sutton has played an important role in the team's defensive success. The Impact has only allowed 11 goals in 20 games so far, compared to 16 goals after 20 match-ups in 2003. The improvement has come in spite of the long-term absences of Jason DiTullio, David Fronimadis and Abraham François, all defenders with torn ACLs.
"He improves from year to year, especially in the way he manages a game," said Leduc about Sutton. "He knows how to talk to the players to avoid mistakes. That's how he's become of the main leaders on the team."
In addition to his ability to make the key saves, Leduc praised Sutton's confidence when comes time to intercept balls that come through his area.
"Whether it's a corner or a cross, everything that floats through, we know he's going to get it," said Leduc. "He controls the penalty area. He makes our job easier, and that gives more freedom to the defenders."
Sutton admits he has perfected his pre-game preparation, especially the mental aspect.
"Concentration is a big part of the goalkeeper's performance," explained Sutton. "I visualize certain game situations. For example, I visualize a corner kick and see myself coming out for it, or I see an opponent getting ready to shoot and me making the save. It's very similar to what hockey goaltenders do."
Sutton also pointed out that his team's defensive performance has not hampered the Impact offence from scoring timely goals. Montreal has a goal differential of plus-18 after 20 games, compared to plus-14 last year at the same time.
"Guys have it in their heads to support each other defensively, but offensively as well," noted Sutton. "They all understand their role and also know when the time is right to move forward, and when it's time to get back."
