June 29, 2016 - Appalachian League (ApL)
Princeton WhistlePigs News Release
The Princeton Rays (4-3) dropped the series opener 14-3 to the Greenville Astros (2-5) on Wednesday at H.P. Hunnicutt Field.
The Rays pitching staff struggled on the mound, allowing four home runs and 14 runs total, the most so far this season.
Princeton starter Resly Linares pitched three and two-thirds innings, giving up six runs on nine hits and striking out five.
The Rays bullpen also struggled to find a rhythm as relievers Dalton Moats, Mikey York, and Orlando Romero gave up a combined eight runs during the rest of the contest.
Princeton's bats couldn't overcome the growing deficit during the game, but Rays designated hitter Bobby Melley led the team with two hits in the game, including his second home run of the season and his second in as many games.
In addition to Melley's three RBI, Rays outfielder Ryan Calloway recorded a hit on his birthday, while Princeton shortstop Blake Butera and outfielders Trek Stemp and Emilio Gustave also added a hit each.
The Princeton defense committed five errors in the loss, the highest tally so far this season.
The Rays will look to get back on track in the second game of the series against Greenville on Thurs., June 30 beginning at 7 p.m. at H.P. Hunnicutt Field.
The Princeton Rays have been the proud Appalachian League affiliate of the Tampa Bay Rays since 1997. All questions may be forwarded to the Rays' front office at 304-487-2000 or princetonrays@frontier.com.
