Strong Island Sound News Release
Patchogue, NY- Three games in three days is tough enough. Especially on the road. But when you factor in traveling to another country not once, but twice in that period, it gets even harder. But the 12-7 Strong Island Sound are ready to make a statement this weekend. And they are not going to let a little thing such as travel time get in their way.
On Friday, January 19, the Sound will be in Quebec City to take on the 10-6 Kebekwa. Winners of two straight, the Canadian expansion team is looking to improve on their third-place position in the tough Blue North Division. Ahead of them are the defending ABA champion Rochester Razorsharks and the Vermont Frost Heaves. This will be the third meeting between the two teams, with the home team winning in both previous contests. On December 15, the Kebs defeated the Sound in Quebec City, 101-92. Eight days later, the Sound returned the favor by triumphing over the Kebs on Long Island by a score of 98-83.
A short turn-around results in an afternoon affair in Vermont against the surprising 17-4 Frost Heaves. The expansion club, owned by Sports Illustrated senior writer Alexander Wolff, has played superbly in their first ABA season. The teams have split the two games so far this season, both taking place at Suffolk Community College. On December 1, the Sound were the victors, 104-98. Then on January 6, the Frost Heaves held on for a 96-94 win after Strong Island nearly tied the game on a tip-in attempt with 0.5 seconds left.
Twenty-four hours later, the Sound will find themselves back in Canada to face Montreal. The teams played three games last season, with the Matrix winning the series. Montreal defeated Strong Island at home and on the road, and the Sound won the lone game on the island. This year, Montreal is struggling with a 2-13 record and are currently in last place in the Blue North Division. They recently went through an ownership change and are in the process of deciding on a new team nickname. They are holding a fan vote on their website, and the choices are Flash, Lights, Phenix, Renaissance, and Royal.
The Sound's next home game is on Saturday, February 10 at 7 p.m. versus the Richmond Ballerz. It will be "Youth Services Night," with the team donating 500 tickets to the Suffolk County Youth Bureau.
