Grant Named MLL Offensive Player of the Week

(Rochester, NY)... Major League Lacrosse, the premier professional outdoor lacrosse league, announced Monday its weekly award winners for the week ending May 25th, according to MLL Commissioner David Gross.

Rochester Rattlers attackman John Grant was named as the League's Offensive Player of the Week while Los Angeles Riptide defenseman J.J. Morrissey was selected as the Defensive Player of the Week. In addition, Philadelphia Barrage goalkeeper Brian Dougherty earned the MLL Goalkeeper of the Week award.

Grant scored seven goals, including a two-point marker, and added an assist as the Rattlers improved to 2-0 on the season with a 17-14 victory over the Boston Cannons on Friday evening. He scored three of his goals during the fourth quarter when Rochester overcame a 13-10 deficit by scoring seven goals. Through the first two games, Grant leads the MLL with 11 goals and ranks second in the league with 13 points.

Morrissey played a key role in helping the Riptide earn their first win of the season, a 10-9 victory over the Chicago Machine on Sunday evening. He limited Chicago attackman Kevin Leveille to just one goal and one assist. In addition, Leveille was limited to just three shots in the game.

The reigning Warrior Goalkeeper of the Year, Dougherty made 18 saves as the defending MLL champion Barrage improved to 2-0 on the season with an 18-12 victory over the Long Island Lizards on Sunday night at Texas Stadium. During the second and third quarters, he posted 11 saves while allowing just five goals. It was the 50th win in Dougherty's career, which are the most in MLL history. In two games this season, Dougherty has stopped 61.7 per cent of the shots he has faced while allowing 11.85 goals per game.

After posting a 2-0 record on the road to begin the season, Rochester opens its 2008 home schedule on Saturday, May 31st at 7:30 p.m. at PAETEC Park against the two-time defending champion Philadelphia Barrage. The game will be broadcast on WYSL 1040-AM, wysl1040.com and ESPN360.com. Prior to the game, fans can enjoy a pregame party, courtesy of Foodlink and Bud Light. As part of the festivities, Hot Daddy Rocks will be performing live, starting at 6:30 p.m. After the game, fans can head down to The Distillery at 1142 Mt. Hope Ave. for the official postgame party.
