Cowlitz Black Bears News Release
Bend: In the second of four straight games against the Bend Elks, Spencer O'Neil (University of Oregon) delivered. He became a piece of Cowlitz Black Bears history with his second-inning grand slam-the organization's first.
Preceding his blast was six singles that together gave the Black Bears a near-insurmountable 9-0 lead just an inning and a half into the contest. Cowlitz sent Matt Maurer (Pepperdine) to the hill, and he shut out Bend but command problems limited him to five innings of work. Richi Sandoval (New Mexico Highland) pitched through the 8th inning, and Ricky Villarreal (Pepperdine) returned from injury to toss a scoreless ninth.
Greg Velazquez emerged from a season-long slumber by going four-for-five with a double. Brent Graham (LCC) went two-for-three with a run scored and Braxton Miller (Lewis-Clark St.) reached base without a hit by drawing three walks and being hit by a pitch.
The Black Bears return to Story Field next Tuesday July 19th for Azteca $2 Tuesday where general admissions tickets, hot dogs, soda, and beer are all two dollars. It's also Kelso Schools Spirit Night. After that it's Burgerville Family Night on Wednesday and Thirsty Thursday with Ladies' Night.
